  • One of my favorite things to shoot are portraits at night on the street using natural lighting. Natural in the sense you aren't using studio lights or flash guns, but finding light sources that already exist. You can find so many vibrant colors for backgrounds, and street lights can give great illumination to your subjects. I want to take this concept and develop it further, and to this end I'll be doing a wedding shoot on the gritty/grimy streets of Luohu soon, at the request of the bride and groom. Nice to have people that appreciate this style of shooting! Here are a few casual shots from over the years.

  • New Compact Camera

I'm back on a VPN, which allows me to bypass the Great Firewall of China!

I got a Canon S90 from my parents for Christmas. Here are a few photos I've taken with it over the past few months. All in Shenzhen:

The view from Seb's balcony. I work in the far background!

I'm not sure what these dudes are writing but I assume its either their plight or their poetry.

Walking through Gangxia, my ongoing photo documentary project.

    Light Graffiti in Gangxia!

David at one of my DNB nights! This was a good one, great atmosphere.

One of my favorite veg dishes; scrambled egg, dragonfruit, cabbage, and tomoto over a bed of rice. Sounds strange but its awesome!

This is my private student, Kelly, who is a genius:

This old woman was especially cute.

    Hair's starting to get long.

Life in Shenzhen has been good/crazy as usual!

  • Pep Love

It seems like every time I come home from China I immediately hit the road to see one of my favorite rappers. You don't get a chance to see much good live music in China so you better make the most of the opportunity while in America. Last year I saw ATCQ for the first time ever after years of dormancy and it was amazing. This year I got to see another favorite rapper of mine, Pep Love, who is also coming off a long hiatus - 8 years since his last record. He's an underground west coast rapper, so the show was small, but all the better for the intimate vibe. I met his manager who was pretty cool. Then I met his DJ who is also a surfer from Virginia and really down to earth. And finally I met the man himself backstage after the show. A great way to celebrate your birthday, fresh off the plane. Oh yeah, and it was his birthday too. (I turned 28, he turned 35) Here's a few pictures, but nothing too great because I was more focused on the show itself.

    Great show Pep!

  • Old panoramic from 2006

    Click photo for full size.

For the first time in over 2 years, I have direct access to xanga in the mainland, thanks to a TOR client which can bypass the censors. Sweet!

I took this picture from the roof of my building 3 years ago. I always loved going up there to relax, look over the city, and take shots. I did the same thing tonight on top of my current building, which is located just next to the tallest one you see in this picture. I'll post that later. Take care!

  • My Girls

I teach English at a community college in China. Most of my students are young working females, studying towards a degree which will help them advance in their careers. They are the nicest students ever and I love teaching them. Recently I taught a photography lesson and passed my camera around. Here are some of the results.
